Art in Storefronts temporarily places original art installations by San Francisco artists in vacant storefront windows located on Taylor Street in the Tenderloin, Third Street in Bayview, Central Market Street and Lower 24th Street in the Mission to engage local artists in reinvigorating neighborhoods and commercial corridors that have been hard-hit by the economic downturn.
It also provides artists, who have also been affected by the economy, with a unique opportunity to showcase their creativity in transforming vacant storefronts into free exhibition spaces and to garner public recognition for their work.

The Work Office (TWO) is a multidisciplinary art project disguised as an employment agency. Informed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) of the Great Depression in the 1930s, TWO is a gesture to “make work” for visual and performing artists, writers, and others by giving them simple, idea-based assignments to explore, document, or improve life in New York. From a central office, TWO’s administrators will interview, register, and hire employees; assign, collect, and exhibit work; and distribute Depression-era wages to employees during weekly Payday Parties.

“How it would be, if a house was dreaming”
The conception of this project consistently derives from its underlying architecture – the theoretic conception and visual pattern of the Hamburg Kunsthalle. The Basic idea of narration was to dissolve and break through the strict architecture of O. M. Ungers “Galerie der Gegenwart”.
Resultant permeabilty of the solid facade uncovers different interpretations of conception, geometry and aesthetics expressed through graphics and movement. A situation of reflexivity evolves – describing the constitution and spacious perception of this location by means of the building itself.

I’ve Lived: Post-it Notes for Neighbors is an interactive installation that helps demystify the topic of how much New Yorkers pay for their apartments by inviting local residents and other passers-by to share information about their living situation. Inspired by Illegal Art’s “To Do” installation, this participatory project covers a storefront window with Post-it notes stamped with specific fill-in-the-blank forms. Passers-by can fill in a note with their own apartment information and balk at the high and low numbers paid by others.
By the end of the week, the window will have transformed into a useful collection of personal notes created by and relevant to the community, as well as serve as a reflection of changing real estate values.

Graphic designers Ryan Tym and Richard Holt invented a primitive new form of social networking. Through the power of Post-it Notes and large windows, they were united with each other’s office.
What started out as a simple “Hello” message, quickly got a response back, before the conversation developed into two days of friendly banter. There were offers of tea, confessions of love, a knock-knock joke and even a marriage proposal all in the space of 48 hours.
At one point, there were five floors in three buildings, having cross-street conversations (albeit in as smaller sentences as possible!) and all of this soon went up online when our counterparts messaged “Flickr”.
From there, they all uploaded photos of the conversation to a group on the photo-sharing site, and the event soon gathered pace on Twitter, developing its own hashtag- #stickynoteromance.

The Manifesto Club campaigns against the hyperregulation of everyday life. They support free movement across borders, free expression and free association. They challenge booze bans, photo bans, vetting and speech codes – all new ways in which the state regulates everyday life on the streets, in workplaces and in our private lives. They believe that the freedom issues of the twenty-first century cut across old political boundaries, and require new schools of political thought, and new methods of campaigning and organisation.
The club just released ATTENTION PLEASE, a photobook of unnecessary, absurd and patronising safety warnings in public space, submitted to us by members of the public over 2008-9. The collection contains submissions from all over the world, and also from individuals including the Turner prize-winning artist Grayson Perry.
