Kingdom Calm by Speakcryptic
Tomorrow sees the opening of an exhibition of personal work from the amazing Speakcryptic. Pictured above is a video preview of his doorgift, a zine titled Kingdom Calm.
In his own words: “I’ve always wanted to do a lil’ zine for the longest time and that desire, I guess, came from my affiliation and fascination with punk rock culture and its DIY ethics. But I’ve been putting it off because I didn’t think that I had anything interesting to say to the world. And then one day, I just thought, “Hey. Why don’t I just put up a black and white zine of some of my drawings and mix it up with some lousy poetry?”. And I kind of just sat on the idea for about a year. I had already decided on the name “Kingdom Calm” ever since the idea came about, but I just never really gotten around in doing it.
The opportunity and the chance finally came in the form of Double O. They told me that the artists that show at their art space need to come up with a doorgift which will be given out during the opening. So I was like, “Well, okay then. That’s set. The zine will be the doorgift.” So I made a hundred copies, and made it a limited edition -which basically means that I will not be doing a reprint- and decided to set aside 40 as a doorgift and to sell the rest. Creating the zine was lot of fun and I’ve already decided to do another one. The plan is to release a new title for every opening and the next show should be in August, so I better get to work.”
